abstract = "In the last decades, SW Amazonia presented an intense dynamics of
changes of land use, mainly due to cattle raising activities
(fazendas)and to agricultural settlement projects. The objective
of this study is the analysis of the feasibility of multitemporal
RADARSAT data to discriminate land use / land cover types, at a
sector of SW Brazilian Amazonia, in Acre State. In order to
perform this work, RADARSAT scenes from 2 distinct hydrologic
periods were used: end of rainy season (April/May)and end of dry
season (October), and the following thematic classes were defined:
primary forest, secondary vegetation at different development
phases, pastures at different phenological conditions and recent
burned areas. The methodology used, included the following steps:
antenna pattern correction, specIde reduction and linear stretch
enhancement, and RADARSAT integration with TM bands 3,4 and 5
through an IHS transform. Aerial color photographs at 1:20,000
scale and physiognomicstructural profiles of the vegetation types,
were also used. The results obtained indicate that the radar
backscatter coefficient ()is very sensitive to rainfall occurring
in the eve of the acquisition date, what can be seen at the
                         deforested areas.",
